〇About the special exhibition “Goko Kenji Ryunan’s Kumamoto Life”
Fifth High School, one of the predecessor schools of Kumamoto University, opened in 1887 and was located on the current Kurokami Kita Campus of Kumamoto University from 1889 until it closed in 1945. Its 63-year history has been associated with the modern city of Kumamoto, and the 15,000 or so students who enrolled there enjoyed their youth in the city of Kumamoto. In this special exhibition, Kenji Ryunan and his students will show their lives in Kumamoto, which they affectionately call their “second home,” and the inside of Fifth High School, based on photos from graduation albums owned by the Fifth Memorial Hall. We will display such things.

〇About the special exhibition “Fifth High School Students Illustrated by Ikki Kajiwara – Ah, Fifth High School Students: Grass Sprouting in Bufugento”
Ikki Kajiwara, a manga author with roots in Kumamoto, published the group drama ”Ah, Fifth High School Students: Grass Sprouting in Bufugento” (illustration: Joya Kagemaru) in 1978, which was set in the old system of fifth high schools in the early Showa period, and published it in Weekly Manga. It was serialized in “Action”. This exhibition will focus on Ikki Kajiwara’s illustrations of 5th high school students, and compare them with actual 5th high school students to shed light on Kajiwara’s creativity. What does it mean for Ikki Kajiwara to draw the original work set in Kumamoto and 5th high school? We will dig into what happened and explain the panel. At this special exhibition, with the cooperation of the copyright holder, we will be showing the “Phantom Episode 1”, which is not included in the book, at the venue. In this “phantom first episode,” Ikki Kajiwara visits his roots in Kumamoto to cover the story.
It is a documentary, and is an extremely valuable work when considering his artistry.
