It was established in 1927 as the Medical Plant Garden of the Kumamoto College of Pharmacy, the predecessor of the Faculty of Pharmacy. The garden contains more than 1,500 species of plants, many of which are the original plants of crude drugs listed in the Japanese Pharmacopoeia. The garden has also preserved and cultivated plants originating from the Banshi Garden of the former Hosokawa clan, including Mokugenji, Tendaiyaku, Sanshuyu, Sanzashi, and Ninjinboku.
